Sprint Coach Harun Rasheed Says Goodbye Athletics

>> January 26, 2012

Malaysian renowned sprint coach Harun Rasheed announced his resignation as track and field coach after dedicated his time and effort toward the development of Malaysian track and field for at least three-decade long.

It was explained that he decided to resign to enable him spending more time with family and concentrating on business. He unofficially informed MAAU (now MAU) about retirement after poor performances achieved by his sprinters during 2011 SEA Games.

Back in 1970's he was a successful sprinter, having won medals several times in Malaysia open (MAAU) at 200m and 400m and was part of the 4x400m national team that finished 4th at the 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok. But the most important and memorable moments in his career as an athlete could be when his 4x400m team became the champion at two editions of SEAP / SEA Games (1973 & 1977).

Harun whose best time is 48.7s in the 400m set in 1978 at Jakarta and repeated in Singapore, started coach track and field in early 1980's. He has produced numerous of national record breakers, SEA Games champions and Asian continental's top athletes. Seven out of ten fastest Malaysian female sprinters were among the athletes who trained with him.

Although his sprinters had failed to win individual medal in last year SEA Games, his final-year assignment (2011) as a national sprint coach was considered very successful. Under his guidance, both Malaysian male and female sprinters, Mohd Noor Imran A.Hadi (10.40s) and Norjannah Hafiszah Jamaludin (11.60s) became the fastest in Southeast Asia during 2011 athletics season.

The 57-year-old Kedahan born served as chief coach of national athletics for two years since January 2010.

Lee Hup Wei Equals Malaysian Indoor Record 2.15m in Ostrava

Lee Hup Wei, the newly crowned SEA Games champion equaled the 18-year-old Malaysian national indoor record after clearing a 2.15m bar in the high jump during "Ostravska Latka" or Czech High Jump Grand Prix in Ostrava on January 24, 2011. Against a strong field of 16, Hup Wei finished in 9th place, registered the mark on his third jump before failing at all attempts of 2.20m.

The event was won by Jaroslav Baba of Czech Republic with a height of 2.29m. On count back after at least 4 jumpers had the same height of 2.23m, second place was given to Romania's Mihai Donisan, while third place shared by Keith Moffatt (USA) and Piotr Sleboda (Poland), leaving Matus Bubenik (Slovakia) in fifth.

Lou Cwee Peng registered the Malaysian indoor record at Toronto Canada  in March 03, 1993.

Meanwhile U.S-based Malaysian marathoner Woo Chan Yew registered a new Malaysian indoor best performance in 5000m after clocking 15:28.30s in an open indoor meeting organized by the Iowa State University open at Iowa, USA, on January 21, 2011.

Chan Yew who broke K.Baskaran's marathon record (2:29:27) with 2:28:36 at Montreal Marathon in 2010, finished in 3rd in his race.

The Rocket Sprint Start, Bud Winter & Jimson Lee

>> January 07, 2012

The 2011 Revised Edition of The Rocket Sprint Start is now available for order! This book was written and  first published in 1964 by the legendary coach, Bud Winter. In 1968 Olympics, his athlete, Tommie Smith has broken the 20s barrier in the 200m. He clocked a time of 19.83s. Before the Olympics, another sprinter he coached has run 19.92s in 200m, nevertheless was not recognized in statistics. Apart from that, his 400m sprinter, Lee Evans takes the Olympic gold in 43.86s, thus becoming the first man to break the 44s barrier in the 400m. At a glance, Bud Winter coached a total of 37 World record holders, 27 Olympians, and 102 NCAA All-Americans.

Background / Content of the book;

This book is broken down in three parts;

1) The original book printed in 1964
--> A careful analysis on Armin Hary's form, taken from hundreds of slow motion pictures of the 1960 Olympic Games, where Hary won the men's 100m final. He revealed seven ways in which his form differed from the rest of the sprinters.

2) Modern sprint start, by Jimson Lee of SpeedEndurance.com
--> Contents;
a) 5 Phases of the 100m sprint
b) Different types of blocks
c) Setting up your blocks
d) Getting into your blocks
e) The "on your marks" position
f) The "set" position
g) Gun and reaction time
h) Drive phase and clearance

3) Comparing the 1960 Rocket Sprint Start to the Jamaican sprinters of 2008
--> Analysis on block spacing, positions at "on your marks", "set", "gun", "pick up", etc.

Click here to order the book.

#Thanks to Jimson Lee, CEO of SpeedEndurance.com for providing me a copy of this book.

The Best and Most Disappointing Track & Field 2011, and with thanks to 350,000

>> December 31, 2011

There are always articles highlighting the best sporting moments (sort of) at the end of a year to wrap up the year as I did in 2010 (an article which was linked as "top post" by the track and field news)/

This year is a bit different.  AdrianSprints.com, for this year 2011, opted to thank all the visitors who totalled 350,000 visits during the 2011. Indeed, a good improvement of the website. As always, I wish you all the very best whatever you dreamed and targeted next year.

Website... the best way to keep up the content and improve on some other parts is sharing your thought. Maybe you should consider to be a guest blogger during next years? or at least to provide materials (athletics results, sports news, track and field training tips and so on?), which would definitely benefit  the readers for their uses in their training, etc.

"Sharing" a non-article related thing is also very useful, because the spirit of "sharing" good contents in the future might be more easier; in this case, please consider a donation.

Finally, here is my take on the best and most disappointing (simultaneously) scene of athletics in the 2011:
  • I picked the IAAF World Championship's 4x100m men final, where Jamaica team (Nesta Carter 9.78, Michael Frater 9.88, Yohan Blake 9.82, Usain Bolt 9.58), once again (even without Asafa Powell) eclipsed the World record 37.10s set by this country in 2008 Olympics in Beijing, with a new WR mark of 37.04s.
  • Most disappointing: The United States, Trinidad and Tobago, and Great Britain were declared "Did Not Finish", ironically not because of baton's bloopers or issues but the sprinters collided between each other. The video below will reveal full story.

France team, former WR team (1990), strengthened by Christophe Lemaitre and Jimmy Vicaut, taking home the silver medal.

Comeback from retirement, Kim Collins who made a surprise of winning bronze in the 100m  in 2003 world championships, once again helping his country Saint Kitts and Nevis winning the Bronze.
