>> August 02, 2022

Azeem Fahmi has set a new Malaysian national record in the men's 100m.

The 18-year-old clocked a world-class time of 10.09 (+0.8 m/s) to win the heat 8 in the first round of the World Athletics U20 Championships, today, August 1st (August 2nd in KL) in Cali, Colombia.

He took 44.5 steps (a world-class standard) to break Khairul Hafiz Jantan's national record of 10.18, set during the SUKMA (Malaysian Games) in July 2016.

He was the second fastest in the round 1, behind the world U20 record holder Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, who set a new championship record of 10.00 (-0.6).

Azeem improved his best time of 10.28 from the Ipoh All-Comers in June. In early March, he bettered his pre-2022 best of 10.57 with 10.53 during the Malaysia open championships. He lowered his time again (10.37) during KL All Comers, two weeks later.

Currently, Azeem is ranked first among the U20 sprinters in Asia, and is tied for 4th on the senior ranking list, behind Sri Lanka's Yupun Abeykoon (9.96), Japan's Abdul Hakim Sani Brown (9.98), Japan's Ryuichiro Sakai (10.02), and South Korea's Kim Kukyoung (10.09).
