26th SEA Games, Palembang 2011: Men's 4x100m video gets my highest vote in terms of diversity. It was won by Indonesia team in a dead heat finish but the photo-finish said give the gold to Indonesia. First exchange seems perfect for Thailand (Olympic team) and other teams. Unfortunately, Suphachai Chimdee (PBs 10.47, 20.68), torn his hamstring, resulted in a huge deceleration, other teams gained advantage. Singapore took a lead until eventually beaten by Indonesia on the line. Below is the video;

Video 4x400m SEA Games 2011 (Malaysia 3:10.49)

Malaysia's 4x400m quartet wins the men's 4x400m at the 26th SEA Games in Palembang Indonesia. The quartet made up of Subramaniam Kannathasan, Paneerselvam Yuvaaraj, Schzuan Ahmad Rosely, recorded a time of 3:10.49s (season best, SEA leader). The Philippines finished in second with 3:11.16s, while defending champion, Thailand third in 3:14.90s.

Noraseela Khalid 400mh 57.41s SEA Games Champion

Malaysia's Noraseela Mohd Khalid produced a wonderful run to win the women's 400mh at the 26th SEA Games in Palembang. She clocked a time of 57.41s to beat the 2007 champion Wassana Winatho of Thailand (58.97s) in silver medal position. Winatho is on the mission to hunt her 10th gold medal in SEA Games. She currently has nine and is expected to win the Heptathlon tonight. Bronze medal was grabbed by Indonesia's Viera Mellisa Hethrie (59.64s). All winners recorded their season bests.

Seela, 32, whose best time is 56.02s (2006), and already won three editions of SEA Games + medal in Asian championships, previously had to "reduce" her workouts (September) due to an injury. She then spent 6 solid weeks with her coach Hennie Krival at South Africa to prepare for SEA Games, that was after underwent self-training for almost the entire season.

Meanwhile, Vietnam's Dao Xuan Cuong took the gold in men's category after shattering the 10-year-old national record (51.56s - Nguyen Bao Hui) with a 51.45s, beating Thailand's Narongdech Janjai who close in second (51.60s - PB), and Indonesia's Andrian in third place (51.70s PB). Another sub-52 finisher was the Philippines' Junrey Bano who also bettered his personal best to 51.75s.

Lee Hup Wei 2.15m High Jump Gold Medal SEA Games 2011 Palembang

After victories in 2007 and 2009 SEA Games, it seems to be no chance for Lee Hup Wei to repeat and add another gold to his collection. He suffered a severe injury and had to undergo a surgery earlier this year which resulted a long-rest from competition. He has no mark at all during the entire season. However, the authority has made a fine decision to send him in Germany during September-October for training stint and to get better ambient to return the motivation and focus on his preparation. He was selected for SEA Games whilst no others knowing where was he at, except himself or perhaps his coach.

With status of 2007 Asian champion, Lee Hup Wei delivered a gold medal (3rd gold for Malaysia in 2011 SEAG) after clearing a bar of 2.15m, his three consecutive gold, thus proving he still the first choice in Southeast Asia. He defeated Thailand's Pramote Poom-Urai in silver medal position (2.12m). Vietnam's Nguyen Duy Bang was given the bronze despite of had the same performance (2.08m) with a countryman Dao Van Thuy and another Malaysian Najwan Aqra.

Lee Hup Wei achieved his lifetime best jump of 2.27m in 2008 China open in Beijing which has earned him a place for the Olympic Games. He achieved the height  in two meetings (Chennai & Naimette) during the 2010 season.

200m 20.93 Franklin Ramses Burumi Completes Double at SEA Games 2011

Franklin Ramses Burumi shocked everyone on the first day of athletics competition by a strong finish to win the century dash (10.37, +2.1), but that's not enough for this 5"3 man, still hungry, and on day 3 morning he equaled his personal best (21.27) during the 200m heat. In the finals he broke the time with a sub-21 mark of 20.93s to win the 200m and completed the double - a continuation of a double victory for Indonesia since the last three SEA Games editions.

Thailand's Suppachai Chimdee whose personal best is 20.68s finished in second for silver medal, an improvement of his bronze from the last Sea Games. Bronze medal went to compatriot Sompote Suwannarangsri in a time of 21.46, a mere faster than Indonesia's Fernando Lumain (21.47) who manage to run a personal best.

The other finishers were Singapore's Lee Cheng Wei (21.60 PB), followed by two Malaysian Noor Imran A.Hadi (21.64) and Mohd Ikhwan Nor (21.72), and another Singaporean Calvin Kang Li Loong (21.95).

Jamras Rittidet 13.77, Rayzamshah Sofian 13.86 110mh SEA Games 2011

Thailand's Jamras Rittidet upsets two former champions of Malaysia to defend his title of men's 110mh at SEA Games in Palembang. He clocked a time of 13.77s, a new SEA Games record,  National Record, 2nd fastest in SEA All-Time Rankings.

Rayzamshah Wan Sofian, the winner of  2007 SEA Games settled in second place for silver (13.86s) while Robani Hassan the 2005 champion took the bronze in 14.14s.

Some consolation for Rayzam who managed to lower his personal best from 13.91 of which he set en-route to win the 2007 SEA Games. This performance re-positioned himself to 4th fastest SEA All-Time rankings, just behind the 3rd fastest Robani Hassan (13.85s).

Despite of his failing of breaking the dominance of Malaysia-Thailand's podium spots, Vietnam's Nguyen Ngoc Quang came close in 4th position in a time of 14.19s,  improved on his personal best 14.43 set last year in Danang. But the most important one, he also eclipsed the national record 14.32s held by Tran Quoc Hoan.

Philippines' Patrick Sacro Unso produced a good run to break the 14-year-old Alonzo Jardin's national record (14.75) with a new mark of 14.58. He was in 6th position behind Thais Narongdech Janjai (14.30s).

Lo Choon Sieng 20km Walk 1:32:34 - Added Gold for Malaysia SEA Games 2011

Malaysia has continued its domination of men's 20km race walking when Lo Choon Sieng finished first and took the Gold medal home this morning (13.11.2011). He clocked a time of 1:32:34, though some way off to his season-best of 1:28:04 but it was fast enough to upset Indonesia's Hendro (1:33:23) who finished in second place for a silver medal. Vietnam's Nguyen Thanh Ngung went to win the Bronze medal in 1:35:48. Lo compatriot and defending champion Teoh Boon Lim managed the fourth or last position after clocking a time of  1:37:05.

For a record, Lo Choon Sieng holds the second best time in Southeast Asia in 1:27:36 which he set in Nomi, Japan last year, only Malaysian Harbans Singh had faster time 1:24:50 set in Podebrady back in 1997.

Meanwhile, as expected Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc defeated all other women walkers to win the Gold medal in a time of 1:43:22. Myanmar's Kay Kay Mya Tun (1:45:19) and Indonesia's Darwati (1:46:04) bagged the silver and bronze medals, respectively. Former champion Yuan Yufang has failed to deliver a medal after a poor performance.

Training setback was the known to be the cause of her outcome. In this edition, she clocked 1:48:29, which was over 16 minutes slower than her personal best of 1:32:25.

Serafi Anelies 100m 11.69 Sprint Queen SEA Games 2011, Nongnuch Sanrat 11.69, Vu Thi Huong 11.73

Serafi Anelies Unani has becomes the sprint queen of the 26th SEA Games, another great history for this sprinter after the 2010 ASEAN University Games title. She crossed the line at 11.69s, the photo-finish system detected that she was the first one to touch the line, just earlier than Nongnuch Sanrat of Thailand who recorded the same time but settled in silver medal. Bronze medal went to former champion Vu Thi Huong of Vietnam who stopped the clock at 11.73s.

Serafi improved on his personal record from 11.76 which was set during the Gold medal winning of the 15th ASEAN University Game in Chiang Mai in 2010. Her new time has also place herself among TOP 20 All-Time Rankings for Southeast Asia.

And with the surprise of winning, the host Indonesia has successfully won both sprint 100m titles from the 26th SEA Games.

Triyaningsih Won 10,000m - 3 Golds in Hands

In athletics event of the 26th SEA Games, who is going to win three gold medals? Triyaningsih of Indonesia !!

The first Gold medal already bagged home and it's from 10000m. En-route the race, realizing of the goal of 3 Golds, she did not even push herself to maximum, just puts some extra effort in some parts of distances to make sure the gold is her. In spite of that, she still had over one minutes margin between her time 34:52.74 and the silver medal winner Pham Thi Binh of Vietnam (36:04.83).  Another Vietnamese Pham Thi Hien closer to her teammate in bronze medal position in 36:16.84.

Tomorrow is the rest day for Triyaningsih. And will be back to track on the following day for 5000m, an event for which she holds the SEA Games and Southeast Asian records, 15:54.32 - surely another gold medal. The closest rival would be teammate Rini Budiarti who has run 16:08.00.

She will have another rest day before the Marathon on the last day. Kindly noted that she placed 4th in this event during Asian Games 2010. She also holds a personal best of 2:31:49, faster than some male runners in SEA Games- without doubt another gold.

Special thanks to the organizer for a wonderful schedule or timetable which created special for Triyaningsih to hunt 3 gold medals. But this is not strange, Michael Johnson had the pleasure from schedule adjustment in 1996 Olympics. Not only that, they did the same to Carl Lewis as well back in 1984 Olympics. And many others. But keep in mind that this approach is legal.

Tan Song Hwa Wins Gold Hammer Throw 55.15m - SEA Games 2011

As anticipated Malaysian hammer thrower Tan Song Hwa delivered the first gold medal for athletics event. She hurled the iron ball in a distance of 55.15m in the fourth attempt, only her second legal throw after the first attempt 55.08m, but good enough to secure the gold.

Song Hwa who stands at 5"3 however did not able to produce a National record, for which she did twice this year, in Bangkok (58.60) and Szombathely Hungary (58.71)

Indonesian hope Rose Herlinda Inggriana  threw 51.95m to bag silver medal while Philippines' Loralie Amahit Sermona went to win the bronze medal with a throw of 49.69m.

Franklin Ramses Burumi 10.37 Sprint King SEA Games 2011, Gary Yeo 10.46, Wachara Sondee 10.47

Indonesian Franklin Ramses Burumi became the sprint king of the 26th SEA Games in Palembang after winning the blue ribbon event in a wind assisted (+2.1) time of 10.37s Singaporean Gary Yeo Foo Ee improved on his best time to 10.46s (from 10.62s) to win the silver medal, just ahead of Thais Wachara Sondee (10.47) in bronze medal position.

"Yes, I believe I can win the 100m. I'm a hundred percent confident!", says Franklin in a pre-race interview.

It was a great victory not only for Franklin who ran 10.32s (doubtful-timing)  during March's Jatim Open in Surabaya, but for the whole country as they successfully retained the men century dash title for three consecutive times.  Suryo Agung Wibowo won the 2009 (10.17) and 2007 (10.25) editions but went to absence in this edition to focus on his study and perform the hajj in Mecca.

Indonesian Sprinters Fadlin & Franklin Burumi Warns Their 100m Rivals

Two Indonesian men Sprinters won their respective semifinals races easily and set themselves the favorites for Gold-Silver in the blue ribbon final this evening.

Mohamed Fadlin had no problem to advance, clocking 10.69s in the semifinal 1, beaten Malaysian Ambrose Jilom in the second place (10.78). Surprisingly Thais Wachara Sondee was just able to place third in a time of 10.85 in the "slow-pace" race. Despite of clocking a poor time 11.09, Cambodian Pin Wanheip created a history for his country as he was confirmed for a final spot. He beats Singaporean Mohd Elfi Mustapha (11.22) who injured and denied his chance to hunt medal.

Franklin Ramses Burumi who ran a doubtful-timed 10.32 in Surabaya in March won the semifinal 2 in a time of 10.54, close to his real personal best 10.50. Singaporean Gary Yeo Foo Ee also proceed easily after clocking 10.64. The favorite Mohd Noor Imran Hadi of Malaysia who ran 10.40 this year seems to have problem and finished in third position (10.73), just ahead of Suphachai Chimdee (10.75) the 200m specialist with PB 20.68.

The fastest man and woman of the 26th SEA Games will be known this evening when the finalists are scheduled to compete in the finals at 6.30pm (Palembang time).

Marestella Torres 6.71m SEA Games - Gold Medal, Games Record, National Record, SEA Record

The 2009 Asian champion and gold medal favorite Marestella Torres of the Philippines leaped a respectable distance of 6.71m in long jump during the 1st day of SEA Games in Palembang, not only confirmed the gold medal but has broken many records at once - Personal Record, National Record, Games Record, and Southeast Asian Record. In fact, she placed 2nd in Asian Ranking so far in 2011, just shy one cm to the current leader Yuliya Tarasova of Uzbekistan.

Her previous best jump 6.68m was set during the 2009 Games in Laos. The host jumper Maria Natalia Londa was also in her best shape, bettered her national record by 21cm after her perfect jump 6.47m. Torres's teammate Catherine Kay Santos bagged bronze in a distance of 6.25m, an improvement of personal best by 16cm.

51.32m in Discus Ensures 10th Gold for James Wong

Singaporean great James Wong Tuck Yim won his 10th SEA Games Gold medal after winning his favorite event discus throw during the 1st day morning event (12.11.2011) in the 26th SEA Games in Palembang, Indonesia. His fourth throw topped 51.32m, bettered Thais Kwanchan Namsumboo who opened his round with 50.32m, and ensured the Gold medal in the hands - 9th Gold for discus throw (1993, 95, 97, 99, 2001, 03, 05, 09, 11) + 1 Gold from hammer throw in 1997 = 10 Gold Medals !!

None of the next throws by himself and  his opponents were able to surpass the distance including Indonesian Hermanto who had the best throw from last attempt of 50.56m and settled for silver, puts down Namsumboon in bronze position.  It's surely a great upset for Hermanto who aimed for Gold after breaking the National record 52.95m during the last July national championships in Jakarta.

James Wong set his personal record in Wiesbaden back in 1999 in a distance of 59.87m,  over 4 metres better than any other Southeast Asian in history. At the time, he placed among TOP 100 in the World for discus throw.

Some remarks about these rankings, compared to the 2009 SEA Games in Vientiane, Laos:
If this ranking would be confirmed, then it would be a massive change to the medal tables
(for athletics) at the 2009 SEA Games, where Thailand won 48 medals (including 14 Golds) and other countries were far behind with;
22 medals / 7 Gold for Vietnam
20 medals / 7 Gold for Indonesia
16 medals / 6 Gold for Malaysia
15 medals / 7 Gold for the Philippines.

However, one thing that should be considered is that some athletes are NOT YET placed in the rankings, because they have yet to compete during this season (I.e Yuan Yufang MAS 20km Walk). Also important to note that, Indonesia would gain lots of advantage as the host and will definitely show excellent performances. They likely to dominate the following events;

Men -  All running events !!, however they will encounter a great problem in Field events.

Women -  Sprint Hurdles, Long Distances (3 Golds is within the reach of Asian class runner, Triyaningsih)

Meanwhile, it is of interest to point that Vietnam, a country of over 70 millions population and is very fast developing in their sports, having assisted by expert and scientist from Germany, other European coaches, and some from China as well as educated local coaches, and as you see on table above, they will surely produce the best result (mainly in womens) in the history of their SEA Games appearance.

Just do not forget the Thailand team, the powerhouse of athletics in Southeast Asia for a long time and have been produced huge number of prominent athletes. But the likelihood to loss the dominance is obvious. Nevertheless they could rely on jumping events, throwing events, and relays as well as sprints (but a bit difficult!!).

Two countries, Malaysia and the Philippines would place all the hopes on experienced athletes as usual (I'm not a fan to say veteran). In this edition, Malaysia team seems to have better chance to bag over 6 Gold medals, and I don't see the Philippines to repeat the 7 Golds achieved in Laos 2009. Two Golds is achievable by Singapore and perhaps one for Myanmar, however let us pray for the others to win a bronze.
