ASEAN School Games 2010: Amir Fakhri 21.85 Third-Gold, Jackie Wong Incredible 68.84 Discus Throw

Amir Fakhri Ismail (PBs 21.64/47.90) won his third gold in the 200m and has recorded a new meet record in 21.85. Silver medal went to teammate Hisyam Alias in 22.18 while Thailand’s Kittisak Phiraksa bagged bronze in 22.27.

Thailand however dominated the girl's section. Supawan Thipat wins the 200m with a time of 24.88. She eclipsed her meet record 25.08 that set earlier during SF in the morning. Thipat's teammate Pimpika Kannikom went to win silver in 25.30 while Malaysia's Zaidatul Husna satisfied on the bronze medal in 25.43.

Malaysian Games champion, Jackie Wong outclessed the entire boy’s hammer throw. He posted an outstanding distance of 68.84, some 15 metres ahead of silver medal winner, Boonkong Sanepoot of Thailand (52.96) and more than 30 metres ahead of the bronze medalist Panyawut Bumroong of Thailand (38.18).

Thailand lead the medal tally after three days of competition with a haul of 10-11-13, followed by Malaysia (9-11-3) and Vietnam (7-3-6).

Usain Bolt Cruises 9.84 to Beat Asafa Powell, David Oliver U.S Record 12.89 110mh at Paris Diamond League Meeting

Three-times Olympic and world champion Usain Bolt posted his second fastest time this year in blue riband event on the super-fast track at the Stade de France during the IAAF Paris Diamond League meeting on Friday (July 16).

Bolt clocked 9.84 to win the the race ahead of fellow Jamaican Asafa Powell who recorded a not bad 9.91. Bolt's training partner, Yohan Blake timed 9.95, completed the podium winning for Jamaica.

Shared the fastest time as at now, Bolt and Powell met for the first time this season but Bolt is now unbeaten for 14 consecutive finals of 100m.

Meanwhile,  David Oliver posted a new American record in the 110mh by clocking 12.89, eclipsed Dominique Arnold's record by one hundredth of a second as well as the third fastest time of all time, behind Dayron Robles (12.87 WR) and Liu Xiang (12.88).

Under perfect conditions, Oliver enjoyed a strong start and pulled away, beating fellow Americans Ryan Wilson, who finished second in 13.12, and Ronnie Ashe, who was third in 13.21.

ASEAN SCHOOL GAMES 2010: Malaysia Wins 4x100m relay, Amir Fakhri 47.90, Ajmal Aiman 14.12.

A huge numbers of gold harvested on the second day of the 2nd ASEAN School Games by the Malaysian contingent.

Malaysian quartet of Schzuan Rosli (PB 10.78), Amir Fakhri (PB 21.64), Hisyam Alias (PB 10.79) and Ambrose Jilom (PB 10.71) wins the boy’s 4x100m by clocking 41.35, ends the Thailand’s long dominion and could only satisfied for silver in 41.44. Indonesia finished third with a time of 42.26.

Malaysian Games champion, Amir Fakhri excels the half-mile event by recording a new personal best time of 47.90s for gold. He also lowered the old meet record by a big 0.8 second. Silver and bronze went to Thais Arnon Jaiaree (47.99) and Nitipol Thongpoon (48.16)

Ajmal Aiman posted a promising run to win the boy’s 110mh. Ajmal clocked a new meet record of 14.12, beating Thailand’s Nichanon Pongpimai (14.25) and Singapore’s Toe Renjie Sean (14.97).

In the girl’s long jump, Norshahidatun recorded a new meet record 5.86m to win gold medal. Vietnam’s Luu Tie Heap leapt 5.64m for silver while her teammate Nguyen Thi Tuoi bronze in 5.59.

Malaysian Games champion, Nauraj Singh cleared 2.13 in the boy’s high jump to win gold, well 18cm above of the old meet record. Teammate Navin Raj took a surprise silver (2.06), ahead of Vietnam’s Tran Thanh Binh (2.02).

11 gold medals were offered from the second day. Five gold medals went to Malaysia, only two won by Vietnam, and one for Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand respectively. Full results are available on my next report.

ASEAN SCHOOL GAMES 2010: Ambrose Crowned Sprint King, Baihaqi Eclipsed GR Four Seconds

Ambrose Jilom becomes the fastest man of the Asean Schools Games (ASG) by winning the blue riband event at the National Sports Council Training Centre in Bukit Jalil on Thursday.

Ambrose who trained by the two-times Olympian Watson Nyambek clocked a time of 10.77, a new games record and defeated Thailand's Pongsakorn Sopakorn (10.85) and Yuttana Rittiron (10.94).

He however could only manage silver in the long jump after a 7.03m effort. Noval of Indonesia won in a distance of 7.29, while bronze went to Thais Natthaorn with 7.00.

Meanwhile, Nurhayati Zulkifli claimed silver in the 100m girls in 12.21. Pimpikom Kannikom of Thailand won gold with a time of 11.90 with her teammate Phensri Chairoek bagged bronze in 12.30.

Malaysia missed gold from the girl’s after a countback where three athletes have jumped 1.64m. The gold medal awarded to Thailand’s Arpaporn Kanti while Malaysia’s M.Shandiyani and Vietnam’s Vo Thi Hoa settled for silver and bronze respectively.

Another Gold won by Malaysia at the first day was from the 400mh boys. Despite suffered a cough, Mohd Baihaqi Razlan clocked 52.95 bettered his best time by four hundredths of a second and eclipsed the games record by more than four second!

A total of nine games records were set today in the women's 3,000m, discus, 100m, 400m hurdles and men's 100m, shot put, 400m hurdles, 800m and 5,000m. Malaysia claimed two golds, five silvers and a bronze.

Soviet Scientist Yuri Verkhoshansky Passed Away

It is with great sadness to learn one of the greatest sports scientists Yuri Vekhoshansky had passed away. He was 82 when he died on 26th June 2010 at Rome, Italy.

Verkhoshansky involved in sports since 1950's where he became a track and field coach, mainly in sprints and high jump. He was one of the first to use barbell weight training (systematically) in coaching. As a young coach he was a great fan of the Soviet scientist Dr Vladimir Dyachkov (1904-1981) who was the most successful high jump coach in the World at the time.

He trained many high-level track and field athletes who were successful at the European level and also competed at the Olympic games. His sprinter Boriz Yuboz ran 10.3 and 20.9 at 100m and 200m, respectively in 1964.

The first of his scientific achievements was the discovery of a Special Strength Training method called "Conjugate Sequence System" in 1960's, an advanced training method that was different from Dyachko's Conjugated System from early 1960's. Vladimir Issurin would popularizes the CSS later with a name of Block Periodization. Verkhoshansky also widely regarded as the father of "Shock Method", later called plyometrics by Fred Wilt (1920-1994) who introduced the method to the West.

He continued his career with his research and consultancy jobs in 1970's. He would later discover the Long Term Delayed Training Effects and Concentrated Loading System in late 1970's. The discoveries would keep coaches to remain competitive with the rest of the World, but unfortunately they (coaches) would also use his training concepts with doping practices due to an extreme increased of training volume.

Verkhoshansky had been helped by an American biomechanist and training expert, Dr Michael Yessis who speaks Russians, and regarded by Verkhoshansky as most trusted person outside of Soviet Union in terms of Soviet Training System. From here, he managed to publish many articles and books in English, including the "Supertraining" (with Mel Siff), the greatest training book ever produced!

He had been a scientific consultant for the National Olympic Committee for Italy, where he contributed significantly to the development of Italian sport. He authored more than 500 scientific publications, and his works had been translated into 22 foreign languages and published in 29 countries. He was recognized as one of the greatest experts in the Theory and Methodology of Sports Training.

Spain World Champion, Paul Octopus 8 wins, Jimmy Jump Again

For the first time national team of Spain became the champion of the world after a 1-0 triumph over Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup final match at Johannesburg SA yesterday.

Spain’s winning goal scored by Andres Iniesta at the final 5 minutes in the second half of the extra time in front 89,000 spectators at Soccer City. Consequently, the Dutch joins their 1974 and 1978 team's feat as the World Cup bridesmaids.

In contrast, the wait was finally over for Spain after years of underachieving on soccer's biggest stage. Spain finally joins the World Cup winners alongside Brazil (5), Italy (4) , West Germany (3), Uruguay (2), Argentina (2), England (1) and France (1).

Spain also becomes the first nation since West Germany in 1974 to hold both the European championship and World Cup title simultaneously.

Meanwhile, referee Howard Webb issued 14 yellow cards, including one resulting in a red card for defender John Heitinga that brought Netherlands down to 10 men during second half of extra time.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter handed over the World Cup trophy to Spain’s captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

The Octopus

The Octopus known as Paul has made waves in the world’s business for a month. He made six selections over matches involving Germany before the Sunday’s final match. And on Sunday he has successfully predicted the champion of the world! Spain defeated Netherlands. Earlier, he precisely selected Germany as the third place winner over Uruguay.

Paul first developed his abilities during the 2008 European Championship in which he predicted five out of six games involving Germany correctly.

As a result, Paul was suggested to be sent to Iraq to choose between two bitter rivals - Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his main challenger, Ayad Allawi - vying to head the new government.

Jimmy Jump

Spanish prankster/joker "Jimmy Jump" who has a history of hijacking events tried to grab the World Cup trophy moments before players were due to walk out at Soccer City for the Final.

He ran in from a corner of the stadium and raced across the field toward the halfway line, where the trophy had been placed on a table. However, he was tackled by a FIFA officer just before he could get to the trophy and was carried away by security guards.
