Malaysian Great Ghenda Singh Dies at 89

>> October 12, 2011

Hammer thrower Ghenda Singh
Ghenda Singh, one of the greatest hammer throwers ever produced by Malaysia died at 89 on October 09, 2011, after a short illness as reported by local media. It's about one year after the death of another great Malaysian athlete in the past Datuk Gabuh bin Pigging.

Ghenda was born in India at August 21, 1922 but migrated to Malaysia (Malaya at the time) twenty years later (1942) with the Indian army. He later served as policeman and when the country became independent in 1957 he gained an auto citizenship and maintained the post until his retirement in 1977. Despite of retired from the professional work he actually had not yet retired as a professional athlete at the time, something that only a few on earth could achieve.

Most of Malaysian today are not even aware about the greatness of this special man who represented Malaysia in five editions of SEA Games, and in fact he was able to maintain his great strength and power until at age of 55 where he won the bronze at hammer throw (41.60m) in the 1977 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur. And that was in spite of suffered a severe injury of his pectoral (see photo), and was advised by doctor to not compete ... he took painkiller, compete, and won the bronze !!

About ten years earlier on July 08, 1967 (at 45) he threw a personal best of 44.38m in hammer throw, and bettered his old national record 44.14m. In the same year, he took the first national title after winning the MAAU/National meet at Alor Star, thrown the iron ball at a distance of 42.94m. He did not win the previous national meets as his event was dominated by strong foreign athletes like Muhammad Iqbal of Pakistan, a world class thrower at the days with a PB of 63.10m.

Ghenda however shortly retired from his career as an athlete but then became a great mentor to his son Samreet Singh Dhaliwal.  As his father, Samreet became a great hammer thrower and earned at least two gold medals in SEA Games out of five appearances in the games in which the other three editions he bagged home all silver medals. He achieved a lifetime best of 51.14m  on November 04, 1988 at Kuala Lumpur.

Following are detailed achievements and profile of the late Ghenda Singh;

Asian Athletics Statistics - Season Leaders 2011 09 28

>> October 06, 2011

Asian Athletics season leaders for senior and junior (men and women) as at September 28, 2011. Thanks to my friend Heinrich Hubbeling of Germany (ATFS for Asian AA, IAAF) for the information. Enter the following links to download.

SENIOR LEADERS (Outdoor & Indoor)

JUNIOR LEADERS (Outdoor)

Femi Ogunode leads the men's sprint 100m (10.07) and 200m (20.30)
Naturalised Qatari from Nigeria Femi Seun Ogunode is the winner of double gold medal (200m & 400m) at Asian Games. His 200m time of 20.30 recorded in Diamond League at Doha in May remain the fastest time in Asia this year. On early July, the 5ft 6' sprinter recorded poor times at 100m (10.47) and 200m (20.91) in Kuala Lumpur. However he emerged as the Asian champion after winning the men's 200m a week later at the Asian championships in Kobe, clocking 20.41s (= meet record). And two weeks later he competed at the world military games and set a personal best as well as Asia lead at 100m (10.07), only short 0.08 to Asian record (9.99) held by teammate Samuel Francis.

Chisato Fukushima leads the women's 100m sprint (11.24) and 200m (23.12)
Asian games double gold medalist (100m, 200m) Chisato Fukushima is the leader for three events so far this year (100m, 200m, 4x100m). She won two gold medals at each of the last two Asian championships (2009, 2011) as well as the Asian Games in 2010. Interestingly the gold medals came from different events-Asian championships 2009 (100m 11.27, 4x100m 43.93), Asian Games (100m 11.33, 200m 23.62), Asian Championships 2011 (200m 23.49, 4x100m 44.05).

Note: there's correction of the files at Asian Athletics website, therefore the latest version of Asian Athletics Season Leader 2011 is only available from this website, as long as the others haven't updated.

Southeast Asia Leaders from Vietnam (as at Sept 20)

Truong Thanh Hang at Asian Champs, Kobe 2011
Top Vietnamese runner Truong Thanh Hang wins the 800m easily in a time of 2:04.81s on Sept. 12. A day later, the newly-crowned Asian 800m champion took another gold at 1500m, clocking  4:17.49s in a "solo run" by over 16 seconds. Thanh Hang, the "single" candidate of two Gold medals (800-1500) or if not three (from 4x400m) at SEA Games 2011, and the following who achieved the best performances so far in SEA in their respective events, will be hunting for the gold medals for Vietnam Team at the SEA Games, Palembang, Indonesia in November:-

1) Men's 400m Hurdles: Vu Van Tinh, 51.68s, with Dao Xuan Cuong very close in 51.69s.
2) Men's Triple Jump: Nguyen Van Hung, 16.30m.
3) Men's Decathlon: Vu Van Huyen, 7263pts (PB 7755pts - no doubt, already " the winner" of 2011 SEA Games)
4) Women's 200m: Nguyen Thi Thuy, 24.04s, along with Le Ngoc Phuong (24.17s) and Vu Thi Huong (24.29s  previous leader) to fill the TOP 3 Southeast Asia at the moment.
5) Women's 400m: Nguyen Thi Thuy, 53.80s.
6) Women's Pole Vault: -see NR-
7) Women's Triple Jump: Tran Hue Hoa, 13.57m.
8) Women's 20km Walk: Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc, 1:41:41s.
9) Women's 4x400m: Hanoi Team, 3:45:45s.

-existing sea leaders-
9) Men's High Jump: Dao Van Thuy, 2.13m.
10) Women's 3000m St: Nguyen Thi Phuong, 10:14.94s.
11) Women's Marathon: Pham Thi Binh, 2:53:09s.

So, 13 Gold medals will be owned by Vietnam, a country with 90 millions population  in SEA Games??

Yohan Blake 200m 19.26s Video, Walter Dix 19.53s - Brussels Diamond League 2011

>> September 17, 2011

Yohan Blake might be the newly crowned world 100m champion in 9.92, but he just missed the 200m world record of 19.19s as he runs a stunning time of 19.26s (+0.7) at the Diamond League meet in Brussels (16 September 2011).

There is a big jump in his timing. It was a great improvement of more than half of a second (0.52s) of his previous best 19.78s he set last year in Monaco (Memorial Van Damme).

Black has pocketed USD 40,000 but a bit surprised with his timing.

He watched Usain Bolt winning the 100m in 9.77s right before his 200m race and was excited to run fast.

He now moved into the second-fastest time ever.

Achieving such impressive performance would certainly surprise most people in athletics, the fans, junkies, even among the coaches, statisticians, and athletes themselves.

Nobody would ever think an athlete world run as fast as 19.26s after winning the World championships.

If you use a simple way to predict the 200m time (from 100m time), this Usain Bolt's training partner (under coach Glen Mills) would have the potential to run the 200m in 19.4 to 19.8 (he ran "9.82s at Zurich" x 2 = 19.64 (plus .20 = 19.84 / minors .20 = 19.44).

Based on this, he would just be clocking around 19.44 to 19.84 range.

I would love to see the split times of Yohan Blake as he looked that powerful during the last 50m.

I thought he would be beaten in the final 50m by Walter Dix the 200m specialist.

Dix finished in second in a highly respected time of 19.53s. If you had a sprint profile as Dix, and somebody had "knocked you down" as what happened in this Diamond League, that performance is "very big."

Dix had been one of the most consistent sprinters in both the 100m and 200m, especially in regards to the Worlds and Olympics. Dix had a PB of 19.69s prior to the meet.

Walter Dix is now faster than Tyson Gay (19.58), Xavier Carter (19.65), Wallace Spearmon (19.65) and Frank Fredericks (19.68).

Nickel Ashmeade was in third in 19.91s, also a new PB.

Yohan Blake would have broken the 200m World record?

Within a limited resource, I have briefly analyzed his 200m race. Here are my takes:
  • The most reasonable time is about ~19.16 - primarily comes from his start!
  • But he can potentially run faster, maybe a sub-19.10 after considering a maximum wind-advantage.
  • These two only applies in Brusells, on the same running track. I will tell you why.
  • His reaction time (+0.269) was not only the slowest among the finalists but is slower than what you would see among the high school athletes. Fast or reasonable reaction time would be around 0.15s for 200m. By only using this, Usain Bold's world record (19.19s) would have gone by at least 0.03s.
  • His second 100m was phenomenal. He covered the home-straight in 9.1+ seconds, faster than Bolt's 9.27 (1st 100m: 9.92s) when he broke the world record.
  • The wide curve. Brussels has a curve/straight ratio of approximately 125/75 meters, almost 10m more/less than the standard track. It means that the curve is wider and makes it "easier" for sprinting than the normal curve.
  • Wind advantage. Bolt's 19.19 was against a wind of -0.3. It means a 0.01-0.02 disadvantage. Blake's 19.26 was under a slight tailwind of +0.7, thus gaining a quicker timing of between 0.03-0.04 during his race. Under 0.0 wind, Bolt would run even faster, but not the case (opposite) for Blake. Given a +2.0 m/s wind, Blake would get faster by another 0.07-0.08.
  • Perhaps, the timing of 19.26s was 'not legitimate', or in other words resulted from erroneous. There might be some technical problems associated with the timing system (malfunction?), only the governing body can confirm this.
  • It could be as well as a result of faulty in wind reading. One of the great performances in the past comes to mind. Florence Griffith's 10.49 at 0.0 m/s or zero wind was reported - despite the apparent waving motions of the flags.
