SEA Athletics 2011 Leaders & National Records

>> July 14, 2011

Below is a lists of Southeast Asia Athletics' 2011 Leaders as at July 10, 2011 or after the 19th Asian Championships in athletics in Kobe;

*Click on the name lists to enlarge.

Note: Thailand's Suphanara S. Ayudhaya (Long Jump 8.05m) and Malaysia's Tan Song Hwa (Hammer Throw 58.71m) managed to break the Southeast Asia Records (and National Records) in their respective events, which previously held by themselves.

Note: Jacoby Nguyen (VIE) in 200m; 2h1, 21.14s +1.7 NR, Southern California Championships, Walnut CA, USA on 05.06.2011 ; & 1, 21.25s +1.2 NR, Riverside USA on 25.03.2011 # Jacoby Nguyen does NOT accepted by VIE-Federation as their athlete and his results could not be included in the statistics at the moment and until he competed internationally for Vietnam for the first time. Hence the Vietnamese 200m NR for men is still held by Nguyen Thanh Hai with 21.27s at Hanoi VIE on 21.11.2002.

It's similar case to several other athletes including the confusion that occurred over the National record status of Pole Vaulter Helene Kong (PB 3.80m), a former Cambodian national athlete who got the France-citizenship and opted to compete for France since September 2007. Hence the Cambodian record for women's pole vault is still 2.81m  (at Forbach on 27.06.2007) which achieved by Helene Kong while she competed for Cambodia.

Thus, all the related performances by above athletes and some others could NOT be valued as for Southeast Asia (but their records & performances will be kept by statisticians for future references).

Below is a lists of National Records set on Southeast Asian soils and National records by SEA athletes at other meets outside SEA soils (restricted for Olympic events as at July 10, 2011);

Southeast Asia Athletics 2010 Rankings and Analysis

>> March 20, 2011

The 2010 athletics rankings of Southeast Asia is now available for download. These rankings include the top 10 ranking lists for most Olympic events. In addition, more detailed lists for the stronger events like the men's 100 metres where a total of 25 performances that ranges from 10.32s to 10.69s have been listed in the rankings. Indeed, these rankings will be very useful especially for athletes, coaches, relevant officials, sportscasters, and commentators, heading to the 2011 SEA Games in Palembang. Special thanks to Mr. Heinrich Hubbeling of Germany (Asian AA statistician) for the great help in preparing this rankings. Click the button below to download:

On the rankings, scoring have been given to the top eight performances according to standard scoring points for country rankings at the International events (i.e. Continental championship etc.),  where the first place (ranking no. 1) has been given eight points, while second place with 7 points and down through to the eighth place which has got 1 point. Below is an illustration of the rankings analysis:

The above results gives a very clear proof, that the standard of Vietnam improved very much during last year (2010) especially in the women events where they have 27 athletes in the TOP 8 against 16 athletes from Thailand. In other instances, Vietnam has the most athletes on the TOP 8 with 112, get over Thailand which has 103 athletes. However, as you see Thailand remains the powerhouse of Southeast Asia athletics because they has 15 athletes at the rankings number one. On the other hand, Malaysia and Indonesia have shown some improvement or at least maintains their position among the Southeast Asia nations. In contrast, Brunei, Laos and Timor Leste will have difficulty to win a medal at the 2011 SEA Games according to the analysis.

I bet this is what's going to happen at the 2011 SEA Games in Palembang Indonesia in November, unless if there are major changes in the 2011 rankings that will be released a week before the SEA Games.

15th ASEAN University Games, Chiang Mai 2010 : Athletics Schedule - Most Favourable

>> December 04, 2010

Ten days from now on the Asean University Games will opens its fifteenth edition in Chiang Mai, Thailand. This is a bi-annual event where the last edition was held in Kuala Lumpur.

In Kuala Lumpur, athletics events took place in four days, enough for 11 participant countries (2-3 countries with a full participant) with the schedule arrangement was not bad, but the Chiang Mai's schedule is more favourable.

In this edition athletics competition will take place over five days from 18 - 22 December including one day off day. I surprised the off day is on the second day, which is the rest day (strictly not for baton practice!) for sprinters after the 100 metres dash on the first day. Because the 200 meters will be on the third day.

The relays 4x100 meters and 4x400 meters are scheduled on the fourth and fifth days respectively. It will be a straight final for the 4x400 metres but there is the heats for the 4x100 metres. But i don't think so, because in the history of AUG nor SEA Games, normally only 3-6 countries sent their 4x100 metres teams.  So, the 4x100 meters also a straight final.

Since I am a sprint athlete, it is a tendency of judging only the schedule of sprint events, it is why i admit that this will be one of the most favourable schedules in the competition that i participate.

However, i found that the long distance events especially the women's 10,000 metres should be rearranged as they will hold it at 10.45am. Any long distance events should be held during the least hot in a day so the athletes could perform better and also to avoid any kind of heat illnesses.

> Schedule after athletics events also can be found here !

400Meters: Indonesia VS Malaysia VS Philippines VS Thailand (All-Time Top Performers)

>> November 17, 2010

In this post we will look at the 400m performances among the top four nations in Southeast Asia (SEA) which has produced a bunch of top 400m athletes in the SEA history.

The table above shows the most consistent country in producing the quarter mile athletes is Thailand. Out of 8 top 400m athletes, all of them have dipped below 47s, strengthening the fact that they're good in all sprint events.

Malaysia has been consistent to produce the top 400m athletes since 1960's. Started from 1960's, M.Jegathesan (who won 5 gold medals at the Asian Games) has consistently run 46.3s - 46.5s (not counted on the lists due to HT marks), and followed by the excellent performances of Nordin Jadi (two-times Olympian) in 1980's and the recent SEA Games gold medalist, Zafril Zuslaini.

Meanwhile, the Philippines has the fastest 400m athlete in Southeast Asia. Isidro del Prado (two-times Olympian) set a 45.57s back in 1984 in Manila and remain as the only athlete in SEA history who has broken the 46s barrier. His time is still considered a world class performance until at the moment.

In spite of the fact that Indonesian are not quite consistent in the one-lap event (on the table), but they have the 3rd fastest quarter miler in the SEA history, Elieser Wettebosi (46.37s). Also remember, the first two fastest sprinters in Southeast Asia, Suryo Agung Wibowo (10.17s) and Mardi Lestari (10.20s) are belong to Indonesia.

In the SEA Games history, Malaysia has won the men's 400m 11 times, Philippines won 7 times, Thailand won 5 times. Malaysia tied with Thailand as the most dominants team in the men's 4x400m with a 10 winning each.
